A New Day, A New Look
All right, I’ve warned you before that I like change. Today and in light of things that have recently occurred, I’ve decided now is the time to make things new again.
And I’ve obviously had the LOTR trilogy, my favourite movies of all time, on my mind. Hence the new header. AND the new tagline, which is Boromir’s line to Frodo.
Go ahead, call me geek. (But it’s what’s going to make EditQuest successful!)
I think you can probably apply the meaning of the tagline here yourself, but the inspiration to use it came to me while I was trying to sleep last night. I was thinking of all the support I’ve had here, and of how some of you have actually become my own little fellowship, those who stick with me, comment, make me laugh, inspire me, shield me, aid me, arm me, and sometimes even carry me, and who likely will to the end, whenever that may be, even if I say stupid things or tell you to go home (which I can’t imagine happening).
So this is a fellowship of the blog, if I can be totally cheesy. Which I can, because it’s my blog.
Not that I’m bearing a heavy burden like the ring, but my journey through life — whether in personal development, writing, editing, screwing up and learning computer stuff, whatever — needs a fellowship. And stepping out into the blogosphere can be scary. As Bilbo said, “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
To tell you the truth, now that I know who’s out here, that phrase makes me shiver with delight. You guys are always encouraging me to newer heights, better places. Indeed, there may be no telling where I’ll be swept off to, but with you all, it’s always going to be somewhere good.
But this is also a two-way thing. I’m not here to suck up people’s good energy and to not give anything back. The fellowship is not all about me. At the very least, I hope to have more posts, better posts. And I am so glad I can now more regularly visit and comment on your sites as well since I have a new and functional laptop!
I’m off to work now. If there’s anything you’d like to see here, whether posts or features, let me know!

Hey, if anyone knows how to get RSS buttons, that would be cool. I don’t like just text in the meta box. Not very visible.
Steph,
I want to say something here and I want you to take this as the compliment that I intend it to be and NOT as a downer on EditQuest, which I am very much looking foward to and will promote with all my heart and soul.
I will miss your more personal Steph fellowship blog if it goes away. THe community you are building here is just awesome and I always feel like I can pop in, grab a snack and sit down for a chat with my little sis.
Please come by my words of wisdom post and add some great fellowship qotes! I would be honored. I am a HUGE fan!!!!
Love the new look and *IN OTHER WORDS* is such a great name that if you give it up I have a feeling someone is going to steal it.
So………I know you are busy and all..just saying…you are awesome.
Lovely new look and I’m with Wendi – I want you to keep this blog going when you launch EditQuest!
Can I be in the fellowship? I’ll shine saddles… or something…
Wendi and Alex: you guys are as bad as Bell commercials!! You’ve gone and made me all teary. And you bet this will be staying. I’ll never leave In Other Words for EditQuest. EQ is only my work blog. This is my hanging out blog, my fellowship blog.
Wendi, little sis, you’re welcome here forever. Grab a peanut butter ice cream bar.
Alex, my wizard friend, no guide of mine will ever be shining saddles.
I love this image for your header and also the tagline. I am realizing lately that wandering alone is maybe not the best way to live and that it is enjoying the journey (and the hard times) with other people that makes moments memorable and great.
My grand ideas come to me when I try to go to sleep as well. I have read that this is the time when we can access the great unknown, halfway between sleep and awake.
Thank you for your kind and articulate words of support at my site.
Yes, be cheesy. I love cheese. French. Swiss. Irish. Dutch.
I didn’t have that much time with the old look, but I love the new one. Change is good. Header good, tag line good, geekiness great.
@ Jaden: Any time!
I’ve heard that, too, about accessing the great unknown. Our subconscious mind is a wonderful goldmine. If only I could tap into it in my working hours!
I’m glad you like the design and the tagline. I can’t express enough how much blogging has affected me, in a good way! I think you have it right about “travelling” with people; I’m sure you can see it at least in your journey as a writer!
As for cheese, I’m the cheesemonster. It’s my absolute favourite. I’d eat it over chocolate any day!
@Writer Dad:
Geeks rule.
Jaden,
come journey with us! Taking a mind and support journey with like-minded people causes a synergistic relationship that creates a greater good for all involved more than what any one individual can do alone. The energy swirls up like a weather current. You will actually feel the power of it in your life. I don’t believe we are expected to journey this world alone.
Steph,
I think I will have to be the Big Sis though. I am old enough to be your mother.
Wendi: Shut up! Are you really?? I wondered how old you were when you were talking about your grandchildren…
That’s okay. I’m the big sis in my family of four girls, so it will be a relief to switch places and have someone look after me for a while!
I like the new banner graphic and the headline! Good choice.
Thanks, Dube!
Steph,
Serene. I like it. This design seems like just what you need right now, and I’m glad you’ll keep the personal once the professional launches. I’d miss it, too.
Regards,
Kelly
“Fellowship of the Blog” – I like that. Does that mean I can dress up like an elf now?
@Kelly: Thanks! I miss you when you don’t come. I’m glad you do.
@ Eric: dress up as you like! Here, we can be anything.
Steph, I love the look and the tagline! Perfect, perfect, perfect! You can grab standard RSS graphics at feedicons.com and fancy ones at smashingmagazine dot com. I can send you the smashing link via email, don’t want the comment to get caught in WP spam. I love your writing so for me just keep doing what you’re doing. You could write about socks and I would show up and laugh, cry and comment.
@Karen: LOL! You are so awesome!! I love your enthusiasm. Thanks so much for those links and for your compliments and encouragement!
PS. I’ll leave the sock writing for Naomi…
Fansocks are much better than my socks, which have been stuffed in my drawer all summer…
Wendi’s only 29 with a few years experience
(I always say that I’m 29 with 9 years experience.)
Steph, this looks great – and I’m proud to be a part of your fellowship.
Geek on,
Brett
Brett – you’re back! Hooray! Did you have a wonderful time with the fam?
I’m glad you like the new design. And to have you with me.
PS. The hard drive is here for now. I think I will mail it to you. I’ll get on that soon.
Steph,
It was great! I have a couple of neat pics if I can get them off my cell phone. Some nice sunsets… and we had a nice time yesterday – we rented a boat and went for a self-guided cruise to a beach on an island. Very nice…
Just let me know – any time. I’ll recover everything that I can, and then return it to you. You could even put it into an enclosure and use it as an external drive for backups, if you like.
-Brett
@ Brett: What?! Really? I can use it again for backup?! COOL!!
I’m glad you had such a wonderful time. The weather was perfect, at least here. I know that feeling of getting to a beach on an island where no one else is. It feels sooo, otherworldly. Colin and I canoed to one at Algonquin. No one was there, and the water was so clear and there was sand…it was so lovely, that afternoon!
@Steph,
Assuming the drive is okay, you should be able to do that. From what you said, it sounds like your old PC was having some problems not related to the HDD. An external enclosure for a HDD is only about $30-50 depending on what you want feature-wise. And you can use many different programs for backup (on Windows I’d use Synctoy, it’s a Microsoft program and is very good).
My children have never been so tired! I think I know why folks buy boats…
-Brett
Brett – cool! Thanks. And I’ll look up Synctoy!
Hmmm, boat on your list for NZ?
Steph,
How did you guess?
I actually read that 1 in 15 Kiwis owns a boat, and that number is 1 in 5 for Aucklanders… so I suppose I’d be out of place without a boat of some kind. I think I’d like a sailboat, though, rather than a powerboat.
Oh, I too would take a sailboat any day! And I want to try windsurfing too. Ah, I can’t wait to visit you there!!
Steph,
I never saw the old site, but I definitely like this one. You’re inspiring me to get my love of LOTR (and LOTRO) into my blog. Thanks for the great LOTR-themed post!
Hey Beth,
Welcome! And…you’re welcome!
Thanks for the compliments.
